The BegeerStraat Church
Located in the Begeer Parish in the heart of the GaartenKwarteer sits an old church, once a grand symbol of the GaartenKwarteers former success and prosperity, now a symbol of its fall into poverty. It is a classically designed church, dating back to the time before the Cataclysm; it has a church-tower with bell, seating in the main worship area for 200 (if you can cram a few in cheek by jowl, maybe another 40), a decent altar with statue of Korvaio and a number of rooms, cells and assorted chambers for other church use. It is in a perpetual state of fixing up, as volunteers and local artisans of a more charitable and religious bent assist Reverend Moebius Kolaak in maintaining a building in dire need of a good refit. It may be occasionally leaky and drafty, but the Reverend, his wife and parishioners set to the work with a good will, and in traditional Gaartener manner make it work.
The most important and eye catching sight of the church for many is the magnificent churchyard and graveyard, an area of old but well maintained tombstones and memorials set around the church and circled by a low wall and iron railings. The area is verdant seeming, with grass and wildflowers growing amongst the graves, and also a number of trees that have grown, largely a mixture of oaks, sycamores and one solitary ash tree, making the churchyard and graveyard seem almost like a small woodland at times; in summer it is common for locals (and even ones from without) to wander through the greenery and spend time, though there are visitors all year round. The Reverend is okay with visitors, for many often leave small offerings of coin in the offertory boxes which helps with upkeep, and also raises the church profile.
The church serves as a civic centre and social hub for the people of Begeer Parish as well as the obviously spiritual one, and a small church backed militia of local volunteers operates from here with the blessing of the local Watch, helping around the Parish.
