Religion and faith in Accitaine

Korvaio is the deity of humans, and his sphere of influence was Humanity, Civilization and community. Legend had it that Korvaio was once human back before recorded history, and whether this is true or not, it is known he loved humanity more than life itself. His Domains were Community, Law, Healing, Protection and Good, and his alignment was functionally Neutral Good. However, since the cataclysm his clergy have gradually been unable to cast spells stronger than 6th level, and Raise Dead, Augury and other such spells needing the direct intervention of the deity have not been possible. Also of note, the most of the clergy is now part of the Society of Harmony, the Inquisitorial, Religious and Militaristic organisation both above and beyond the laws of the land, charged with the protection of humanity from the 3 pronged threat of Heresy (following any deity or faith other than Korvaio), Arcanism (all Arcane magical practices) and InHumanity (all not pure Human). The Society has a general alignment of Lawful Neutral, and this has led to it being primarily focused on Law, with such concepts as Good, Neutral and Evil becoming more abstracts than absolutes.

The Society is ruled by the Harmonious Lords, a Synod of 12 Senior Society men and women headed by the Lord High Protector, based in the Fortress-Cathedral known as Greyguard, itself set in the mountains central to Accitaine on the borders of Serroya and Varrunna. There, policy on dogma, heresy and the ever vigilant watch against threats to humanity (however slight) is discussed and enforced. The Society is formed into distinct Orders, with them being the Orders of the Hand (a militaristic wing with Fighters, Cavaliers, Paladins, Monks and Rangers amongst their number), the Investigative Eye (Rogues, certain more political clerics, Inquisitors) and the Heart, which much of the clergy itself is connected to (clerics, some Paladins). The Eye is the most Senior, followed by the Heart and lastly the Hand. Within the divisions of the Eye, an Inquisitor outranks other classes by default unless acting themselves under orders of a more senior Inquisitor.

The Society outranks and has authority over even Kings, Princes and Dukes of the lands, for their sacred charge is to stand as the line of defence against the threats that undoubtedly still exist. Since divine spellcasting members of the Society can be any of the 3 Lawful alignments, there are normally factions and movements within the Society, with the more just ones seeking more merciful solutions to the growing threats that face them, whilst the more, shall we say practical (evil and neutral) ones being at odds, albeit any disagreements and schisms are kept out of view of the public eye normally.

The Society hunts down Heresies, such as people following any of the gods or faiths not of Korvaio, along with belief systems such as Druidism, or Diabolism. Heresy is always a capital crime, and Inquisitors have a great deal of latitude and arbitrary power when it comes to punishment and execution.

Arcanism is a more complex issue, but as a rule of thumb, Wizards and Witches are to be put to death as soon as possible, for they have obviously decided to learn their sinister ways; Sorcerors and other so called Innate spellcasters are very much on the discretion of the Inquisitor or person who catches them, with Good ones tending to prefer taking alive (Innate could mean that they never had a choice in the matter and are born with Arcane as an affliction) and imprisoning in secretive prisons and holding areas until a cure can be found, whilst Evil and Neutral ones are far more likely to execute in the field for reasons of practicality (if not hard line dogma).

Lastly, the Non-Humanity issue tends to cover the increasing number of Planetouched starting to appear in society; once almost non existent, within the last 100 years the incidence of Aasimar, Tiefling and other Planetouched has been on the rise, and they are normally apprehended alive if possible, for reasons known only to the Society. Certainly, little to nothing is known of the fate of those captured souls.

The view of most people in Accitaine towards the Society is of wary respect, tinged by a healthy dose of fear. In the barbarous highlands of Amarkacha to the north of the continent they have no respect at all for the Society of Harmony or any of the so called civilized folk, as those northerners are known to have turned their backs upon civilization and indeed their holy faith in Korvaio, following sinister elders who are certainly heretical and following a stubborn and bloody-minded luddite philosophy. The Island nation state of Cantabrius to the North West has also always been an independent thinker in matters of faith and religion with its own methods of worship and ancient denomination of Korvaio, and though always careful to avoid outright insult, provocation and hostility, it always seems to much harder for the Society to operate within its island borders. Schwereinn is also a land where the Society has little hold, for though it has a little more of a presence than Cantabrius, it has its own devout and severe forms of worship and honouring of Korvaio. Heidelgard could be seen to have a higher incidence of Non Afiliated Clergy than other nations and realms, but any difference is hardly at a level regarded as dangerous by the Harmonious Lords. Other areas of Accitaine on the fringes seem less enthused about the Society, and show varying degrees of religious freedom depending on where they are and how easy it is for the Society to actually get at them.

People in the realms still go to church and the clergy are still respected, but there are seditious and heretical voices that grow each year, all suggesting that Korvaio is possibly dead and that prayers go to empty air and a god who is no longer there for his people. The Society is especially vigorous in stamping out such ideas, but they persist and refuse to be completely quashed…
